The Titania Pearl
Green, gold and rose at the same time, and none of them staying still.
Twelve millimetres of peacock Tahitian pearl, round, set in hallmarked platinum. The most colour in the cabinet, held in the plainest setting in it.
Deep green across the body, with gold and bronze rising through it and a rose light gathering at the crown. The oyster did all of it. Turn the hand and the green becomes gold; turn it again and the gold goes back to green. It is a colour that photographs will only ever half-report, which is the best argument there is for seeing it on the hand.
It comes from the black-lipped oyster of French Polynesia — the same water as The Viola, and nothing like the same pearl. That is the nature of them: one shell, and no two results.
It changes with the light, the room and the hour. You will not tire of it.
The setting is the platinum sweep the cabinet is built on, opened at the top and holding the pearl at two points. Against this much colour the platinum keeps to a plain white line and leaves the rest to the pearl. It is made in recrafted eighteen-carat gold as well, for a warmer reading of the same line.
For the person who is finished with choosing between colours.
